Target Audience
couples. These couples are in their twenties and thirties and are in the middle of having children.
These couples come from middle-class families and are in the many different stages of raising children
of all ages. These couples have also noticed a decrease in marital satisfaction due to increased conflict
and not having the needed skills to communicate effectively. These couples are searching for and in
need of help with conflict management and communication.
Audience Needs
The audience is in search of information and research to help them learn about how to deal with andmanage stress in their relationship with better communication skills. Having a child is not the solution
as research has shown that relationship satisfaction can be affected when a baby enters the picture.
“The hard truth is that a large proportion of people find that children create a significant amount of
stress in their relationship, particularly when the kids are young. According to researcher Matthew
Johnson of Binghamton University in his book, Great Myths of Intimate Relationships: Dating, Sex,
and Marriage, research shows that this is commonplace. There is also a decrease in relationship
satisfaction following the birth of the first child.” The issues and challenges these couples face is a
decreased ability to communicate effectively, and the inability to successfully manage conflict in their
relationship. This family life education program will help these couples with suggestions and research
to help couples manage conflict and find ways to improve communication.
Learning Goals
The overarching goal is to help couples have the self-esteem and intimacy they need to have greatcommunication in their relationship. Without self-esteem, intimacy, and conflict resolution strategies, it
is almost impossible to have good communication with each other. The learning goals will provide
focus for the family life education program. They accomplish the following objectives:
● To give couples the tools they need to be successful in their marriage.
● To bring awareness to couples that they need to work on being present with each other after children
come along. Their relationship is still the most important relationship.
● To help couples understand that they need to divide up household responsibilities and make sure
each other’s needs are met.
